BACKFIRE

 
BACKFIRE means “of an engine” to undergo a mistimes explosion in the cylinder or simply to exhaust. 
It could also mean REBOUND, COME BACK or BOOMERANG. 
 
A boomerang is a curved flat piece of wood that can be thrown so as to return to the thrower. It is traditionally used by Australian Aborigines as their hunting weapon. 
 
That is just one of the synonyms of BACKFIRE as a verb. 
 
It can also be used as a noun, BACKFIRE means, a mistimes explosion in a cylinder or an exhaust of a vehicle or engine.
