GRAMMAR:

How good is your grammar?

In the English grammar, one must UNDERSTAND the parts of speech (品詞)which is essential for determining the correct definition of a word when using the dictionary.

Let’s see if you can answer this simple question. NO CHEATING!! (カンニング禁止ですよ!)
(Check the explanation below)

(1) Students are told to print only ( ) is needed so as to avoid wasting paper.

(a) as much as
(b) as long as
(c) there
(e) which

a. AS MUCH AS: is used to say or express 3 things:

> two things are equal in amount or degree (I am sure of that! She likes John as much as she likes Peter.)
> an amount is as large as the other one (My parents earn the same amount. My mom pays bills as much as my dad does.)
> almost but not quite (Patrick said sorry last night. He as much as accepted his fault.)

b. AS LONG AS: is used to say or express 2 things:

> during the time that (He promised, he will stay as long as I want)
> since (Let’s talk more of it. As long as you’ve offered, I make a deal)
> on the condition that (As long as the result is good, I will purchase it)

c. THERE: used to say or express several things:

> in, at, or to that place or position (She visited me when I was in London and she stayed with me there for a couple of weeks.)
> when pointing to indicate the place in mind (Yes, there under your bed. That’s the one)
> in attracting someone’s attention or calling attention to someone or something (Oh hello there! How have you been?)
> to indicate the fact or existence of something (There’s your mother. She’s been looking for you the whole day)
> to comfort someone (There, there. I told you he will just hurt your feelings)

d. WHICH: used to say or express 2 things:

> asking for information specifying one or more people or things from a definite set (Which is the best book to read, this one or that one?)
> used referring to something previously mentioned when introducing a clause giving further information (That is what they asked us to do, to clean the table which was used for the meeting yesterday)

SO WHICH ONE DO YOU THINK IS THE CORRECT ANSWER? 🙂
